Abstract: The paper discusses the importance of voluntary educational activities in museums, particularly in open areas, as a means to boost tourism. Voluntary participation across all generations contributes to promoting culture, as well as preserving and enhancing cultural heritage—both of which are key factors in increasing tourism. Based on the literature, tourism is a significant factor in the economy and has gained substantial support in recent years. However, there is currently no concrete framework for integrating voluntary work into the development of tourism in Kosovo. To explore these components further, a study was conducted using a questionnaire administered in both Albanian and English, with 300 respondents. The survey targeted participants in the Mobile Museum Educational Program, which included 10 activities in museums and open spaces. The results indicate an increase in visitor numbers following the implementation of these activities. The study also found a gap in the readiness of public institutions to develop a concrete plan for integrating voluntary work into tourism development, despite a strong willingness among participants to engage in voluntary activities during their free time. Additionally, the findings revealed a lack of a clear framework for developing such platforms for citizens.
In Kosovo, the majority of citizens are young, but other age groups also expressed a willingness to contribute to voluntary activities aimed at boosting tourism. The study encourages public institutions, both at the central and local levels, to design programs that promote voluntary work, which could play a vital role in both tourism development and the protection and promotion of cultural heritage in Kosovo.
