Abstract: The study deals with the main environmental problems of classical Greek and Roman civilization (soil degradation, deforestation, urban pollution) and their impact upon development of ancient societies. The relation between country and city from the point of view of economic and social development and migration between the city and country are also discussed as the key factor influencing the changes of environment and landscape in the ancient states and empires.
