Paleography of Medieval and Early Modern Inscriptions in Gemer and Malohont

Abstract: A large number of epigraphic carriers have been preserved in the territory of Gemer and Malohont, documenting the development and use of almost all inscription scripts known from other regions and neighbouring countries. Although it is often impossible to identify their creators and patrons, the very existence of individual scripts, together with the artistic execution of individual objects, testifies to the sophistication of this region in the Middle Ages and early modern times. Thanks to field research and evangelical visitations in the 18th century, it is possible to better evaluate the script of both preserved and unpreserved inscriptions. The main specific features of the Gemer-Malohont region include the abundance of preserved Gothic minuscule on wall paintings, the almost complete absence of preserved inscriptions on bells due to their recasting, and the almost complete absence of 16th-century inscriptions due to the Ottoman threat.
