Abstract: This paper focuses on the interpretation iconic (semiotic) portrayal of everyday reality in fairy tales from two northern authors – the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (19th cent.) and Latvian writer Karlis Skalbe (20th cent.), on the comparative background of opposition realistic / historically factual / believable – fictional / magic / fantasy.
